Description
Machine age brass tapper ashtray with very odd relief decor.
This old machine-age beauty was hand decorated with a few very odd characters. It’s a curiosity, may be one-of-a-kind. Decorated in relief with a ferocious dog lunging at a bearded man in uniform with a large sword with a bunny between them. A crow-like bird, a cheshire demon with his rear in the air, and a man on a mount with a wide brimmed hat. A mermaid-like female diving into a native with a mask on, or another demon, with a pitiful face in the center looking up at them. An erupting volcano, a black-face style native and a puff-bellied bird. Another looks like a woman in a skirt hiding her head under a table. The motif is not repeated, all the creatures around the rim of this bowl are distinct.
Well…how strange. Great conversation starter! Large ashtray is great for parties. Handy raised sphere in the center is a “knocker” for ashes or a “tapper” for pipes. Has multiple rests, both small and large. The brass has a spun-effect from the machine that produced it. The decor was hand-done. Estimated age 50 to 80 years old. Maker unknown, no marks. Big ashtray measures 8.5″ wide, 1″ deep and weighs 1 lb.
