Description
Awesome designer cigar rest from late 1950s Italy.Probably made by the Venini or Barbini glass houses of Venice and the isle of Murano in Italy. Stunning relics of a the prosperous, modernist mid-20th Century. This art glass ashtray dates from the late 1940s to the late 1950s.
The glass was hand made with three layers of glass. The blower blows each layer into the other, then slices the top and heat finishes the edges. The inner layer is a light but deep turquoise, the middle layer is full of fine real gold leaf that glitters elegantly, the outer layer is colorless glass. The colorless glass glows light green under blacklight due to the use of a replacement mineral for lead necessary during wartimes and used until the 1960s by some glass houses.
Has a level rest to balance cigars, but great for all kinds of smokes. The cigar shown below is 6″ long. It has a deep bowl with a slight inward bend on the top rim to help contain the mess inside. The teardrop shape allows for easy disposal of butts and ashes. Quality design, quality made.
Weighs 2 lbs. Measures 6″ long, 4½” at widest, and 2.25″ deep.
