Description
Unique signed Italian pottery ashtray in the form of a burgundy bag with gold rope ties.
In like-new condition, but definitely of vintage Italian heritage. Hand-painted mark on upper seat reads 785/914 Italy, followed by an indistinguishable mark (possibly an artist’s signature). The number 785 refers to the form number and 914 refers to the decorative code. Please see image 5.
The bag is reminiscent of what a Venetian noble might carry around in the Renaissance period. The burgundy bag would be made of velvet and the gold rope ties would be made of silk. This pottery replica was formed with a dark red clay and hand-decorated, the gold glaze on the rope contains real gold.
It’s unusual form makes for a great ashtray with three wide cradle rests and a deep bowl within the ‘bag’. Having been in the vintage ashtray collectibles market for over 15 years, we can attest to it’s remarkable uniqueness, we haven’t seen another like it.
It is in excellent condition, perhaps never used. Large ashtray will accommodate cigars, smaller smokes and pipes. Measures 7″ x 6.5″, slightly oblong, by 3.25″ tall.
One-of-a-kind gift for your favorite smoking noble person. Circa estimated 1940’s to 1950’s.
