Description
Relic of the a 1950s retro strip mall shopping center in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Strip shopping centers were the height of modernism in the 1950s. Today the few we see along the side of streets are usually in decay. Their shopping allure was replaced by super stores and giant malls.
Most of the old strip malls have lost their fabulous signs over the years. Retro 1950s signs sported triangles, circus tops, amoeboids, boomerangs, stars and other graphic icons of the era. These proud, loud signs are disappearing relics of a happy, confident and carefree time in 1950s America.
The sign in the image and the Wyoming state abbreviation date the ashtray. The strip mall stores signs read “Tempo”, “Giant Drug” and “Red Owl”. Measures 7″ wide and 3/4″ deep.
