Description
Brilliant and large crystal ashtray with rising bubble decor.
Unique large crystal ashtray sits on a ring of large solid glass bubble balls which elevate the base from the surface. Smaller bubbles rise up along the thick walls of the ashtray. These bubbles would be called ‘Cannonballs’ or ‘Thousand Eye’ if this piece is of EAPG origin. The bubbles would be called ‘boopies’ if made during the Depression years up to the 1950’s. The decor, superior design and highly reflective crystal is also reminiscent of Swedish Glass which often imitates nature.
The crystal is brilliant with high clarity and refraction (see orange reflections in the images). This points to EAPG (Early American Pressed Glass) or Scandinavian glass. The design seems much more modern than that of EAPG decor, so that leaves us with Scandinavian Glass.
We believe this stunning ashtray is probably of Scandinavian origin and was made during the Mid-20th Century. We cannot positively identify it. But, It may be EAPG glass, which would date it to the turn of the 20th century. We’ve never seen another like it.
The balls create a wonderful illusion first seen in EAPG Thousand Eye decor. Each bubble reflects each bubble causing infinite mirrors. See images (the effect is much more impressive in real life). The glass is transparent crystal, without inclusions. The dark areas you see within the bubbles are reflections of the other bubbles.
This big 2-pound solid crystal ashtray measures 5¾” round and 2¼” tall. It features four wide cradle rests. Shown with a 7″ long cigar. Will accommodate all size smokes. In great condition with some very light indiscernible surface scratches.
