Higgins was well-known among the ‘fab’ in the late 1950s to early 1960s. Higgin’s glass objects are hot collector items today. The gold signature indicates it is a piece made at Dearborn Glass in Bedford Park, IL between 1957-1964. Michael Higgins died in 1999, Frances Higgins in 2004. Higgin’s glass objects are hot collector items today.

Most of their art glass was made with the “bent glass” technique. This large ashtray is made of a thick solid sheet of clear glass that was pressed over a mold and “bent” into shape. The colored enamel decor was hand applied on the surface and then covered with another layer of glass, protecting the enamel from wear. The gold painted sand dollar decor is hand applied on the surface of the glass.

Trapped within the layers of glass are many intentional bubbles, the perfect touch for the seashore decor. Thick, foamy bubbles are accomplished by introducing gas in the hot glass.

Four 1½” long, ¾” wide cradle rests will accommodate cigars or cigarette sized smokes. Big ashtray measures 10″ long, 7″ wide and 1″ deep. In excellent, like new condition. Cigar shown is a 5½” long fatty.
