19th Century library decor.
In the mid 1800’s, metal workers began using a new combination of metals which they called “spelt” in casting their handmade works of art. Spelt cost less than bronze, and spelt could be finished to look like aged bronze. This fabulous set is bronzed spelt. Circa mid 1800’s to early 1900s.
The fabulous art deco greek-style war head horses have tightly braided manes, which were gilted with gold. The vertical column bases, and the fronts of the horse heads were also gold gilted. The gilding is in aged condition, about 65% present. The bronzed finish is deep and dark and in good condition. There is no corrosion nor missing metal. There is natural aged patina on the finish, especially on the gold areas.
Each horse head has a different base. One will hold two pipe bowls, the other is a tobacco ashtray. For the library of the distinguished gentleman or lady. Each measure 6″ tall, 4.75″ long and 4″ wide. Weigh 2.5 lbs each.
