Description
Handmade Antique Ashtray from the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in 1940’s Nederlands
This antique ashtray suggests that smoking wasn’t considered a problem at the Tuberculosis Sanitorium in Laren, North Holland (1947 – 1965). The Studenten Sanatorium treated Tuberculosis patients in the days before antibiotics.
This curious antique ashtray was made of redware clay with an irregular sky blue glaze. The glaze was purposely applied this way. Some glaze wear is evident.
The antique asthray is marked “Het Nederlands Studenten Sanatorium on the upper rims. Marked “Bouwsteed” on both sides. There are small, smooth wear spots on the fired clay at each corner. It measures 4.5″ long, 2″ wide and 1″ tall. Two wide cradle rests accommodate cigars and smaller smokes.
