Description
Mysterious metal sculpture ashtray of what at first appears to be a 1930’s plane…but it’s not a normal airplane
The wings are curved down. Cannot find an example of an airplane with curved down wings. See image #7 of a 1930’s airplane. This sculpture has many similarities to an airplane of the 1930’s but it has been altered. The horizontal stabilizers at the rear of the aircraft were removed and the wings were bent down (during production).
A stylized sculpture of an airplane or perhaps a depiction of the Saqqara Bird? The Saqqara Bird, discovered in 1898 at the Pa-di-Imen tomb in Saqqara Egypt dating to approximately 200 BCE, is the only flying object we can find with curved down wings (see images 8 & 9). It is a small wooden bird and underneath it the inscription “I want to Fly“. Very strange indeed!
The shape of the heavy pot metal ashtray conjures a Masonic connection. It is very old, estimated 1930’s. Dark, even metal patina. No maker, foundry or country mark. This tells us it was likely made in the U.S.
In excellent aged condition. No damage except that which was intentionally inflicted by the maker (removal of the rear stabilizers). Measures 6½” long, 4¼” at widest. Weighs 1 lb.
A truly unique ashtray!
