Description
Vintage art glass ashtray by Blenko Art Glass, circa Mid-20th Century. Hand-made in West Virginia, USA in the 1960s.
This ashtray form is shown in Blenko’s 1964 catalog as part number 452. It is easy to confuse this form with Blenko’s 508. The 508 ashtray is shown on the same catalog page as the 452. The difference between the two is the 508 was made with cased glass and had a rounded bubble shape, and the 452’s are usually one layer of glass, with a more fluid shape. Both items can have intentionally placed trapped bubbles.
This beautiful Blenko 452 in Grass Green, with intentionally placed bubbles, is in perfect condition. It has the normal bottom-wear found on heavy, vintage glass items caused by years of surface contact. It measures 6″ round, 2¼″ tall and weighs 1½ lb. Blenko’s soft pontil mark on inverted base.
The design is a very functional ashtray. Three large hand-tooled rests can accommodate cigars and smaller smokes. Extra deep bowl with curved-in rims catches and keeps the smoking debris contained. Heavy weight.
Images 4 & 5 shows other Blenko bubble ashtrays available in Honey Amber and rare Blenko color called Rose.
