Description
Groovy party ashtray signed Mackie 1965.
Hand-made pop art from the days of peace and love. Made to be useful with a flat wide deck for paraphernalia, deep wide bowl and large flat rests. Big ashtray measures 10″ long, 5″ wide and 1.25″ tall.
Glaze in cream white, mauve and black in trippy swirls. The glaze has crazed from age. You can see the crazing in the images. Crazing is caused by elements aging the ashtray over the years…like air and heat. Fine geometrical lines form on the top layer of glaze over the years. Crazing is often seen on old hand-made pottery. Crazing does not affect the integrity of the object. There are no chips or cracks on the pottery.
Awesome relic of the hippie era. “Mackie” may stand for “Bob Mackie” a famous designer of the 1960s. We have seen a few ashtrays signed Mackie and attributed to Bob Mackie by the sellers, but cannot find definitive info linking the ashtrays to Bob Mackie. Mackie is probably the signature of a pottery studio artist of the psychedelic days gone by.
