Mid 20th Century ash bowl with tightly controlled internal bubbles.
A very attractive ashtray from the ultra-mod era of the late 1940s to early 1960s. The unique color is stunning.
Hand-blown, hand-formed. The decor of intentional internal bubbles was done very tight, very geometric. Looks fabulous. This type of internal decoration requires the skill of a great glassmaker. Mixed with the controlled bubbles are ‘unintentional bubbles’ (visible in images). These larger, scattered bubbles are the result of the hand-made process and often present in mid-century hand-blown glass.
A yellowish green reflection under blacklight indicates the presence of Manganese, a metal used to replace lead during the World Wars and used through to the 1950s.
Measures 6″ long, 5″ wide and 2.5″ deep. No maker’s mark. We suspect this may be by Whitefriars, a popular British glassmaker of the 19th century to late 20th century, no longer in business.
