Description
1950’s B & G fine porcelain ashtray with match holder & striker.
Fabulous find. This signed vintage delft porcelain ashtray once graced the tables of one of Copenhagen’s finest establishments, the Hotel DAngleterre.
Excerpt from Denmark travel info: “The Hotel D’Angleterre is five-star hotel that has welcomed many prominent guests, such as royalty, presidents, celebrities and movie stars, who all have added their names to the hotel’s legendary guest list. If the old walls could talk, the stories would be of war and love – and of times of trouble, and times of plenty. With its more than 250 years of history, Copenhagen’s finest hotel can pride itself of being one of the oldest hotels in the world.” Guests during the 1950’s, when this ashtray was in service, included Lauren Bacall, Grace Kelly, Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Kissinger, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner and more.
Bing & Gordahl (B & G) made fine Danish porcelain from 1853 to 1984, when they were joined with Royal Copenhagen. This ashtray is specifically dated 1952 to 1958 by the maker’s marks. It is numbered on the maker’s mark and also stamped “44H6X” on the inner base edge. We believe this mark is B & G’s part number for the hotel items.
Measures 6.5″ wide and 3″ at tallest. Thick, quality porcelain, weighs over 1 lb. Made especially sturdy for hotel use. Center holds boxed matches, and doubles as a stick match striker.
