Description
This beautiful bent glass ashtray was made in the 1950s – 1960s when everyone strived to be gay. The word ‘gay’ meant ‘carefree’ in those days.
All the happy housewives of the 1950s had Gay Fad items in the home. Most were enameled with bright and cheery flowers and fruit. This stunning ashtray is quite different than Gay Fad items we’ve seen. We wouldn’t have known it was a Gay Fad item if not for the original label and it is signed ‘Gay Fad’ in gold. It’s super modern decor reflects our space-age awakening. Made by Hazel Atlas or Anchor Hocking.
Measures 12″ long and 8″ wide. Has 3 rests on each side which seem to disappear into the decor. Beautiful piece of leading-edge 1950s Atomic design. A true rarity. In excellent condition. Notice the ashtray has dual-size for both cigars and cigarettes (see image 2).
